Following up on Your Tax Return
After you’ve filed your taxes, it’s only natural to wonder how things are going. Most importantly, you probably want to know whether your return was accepted and when you’ll get your tax refund in the mail or deposited into your account. Fortunately, it’s very easy to follow up on your tax return status.
Through the Company You Used
These days, many people file their tax return form by using a software program or an online company that helps maximize the refund by finding additional deductions. If this is how you submitted your taxes, you can usually check your tax return status through this company. When the company submits your tax form, the IRS sends verification back to the company. To check your return status this way, you simply have to log into your account. In most cases, the “check status” option will be obvious, but if you’re not sure, talk to the company’s customer support.
Through the IRS
People typically receive their refund around 21 days after submitting the tax return, but you can also check your tax return online through the IRS website. Simply go to the main IRS site and click on the “Where’s My Refund” link on the right hand side. You’ll need your Social Security number, your filing status and the amount of the refund you’re expecting. Enter this information into the site at least 72 hours after you’ve filed and you should be able to learn the date you’ll receive your refund.
Through the Phone
Checking the status online may be convenient for some people, but if you prefer, you can check the status of your return by phone. You’ll still need to know your Social Security number, filing status and refund amount. Then, simply call 800-829-1954 and go through the prompts. This is an automated number, so you won’t be talking to a live person. If something seems amiss, the IRS help line for individuals is 800-829-1040.
Learning when you’ll get your refund doesn’t have to be a waiting game. In just a few minutes, you can easily learn when to expect your refund.
